Back in 06 when I rediscovered my love of novel writing, I wondered how on earth I would come up with a new novel idea. At the time I was halfway through writing my first novel since high school and it seemed to me like I would never be able to think of anything else worth writing about.

Of course, happily, I was entirely wrong.

The beautiful thing for me, and I’m sure for many other writers, is that the more you write, the more ideas you get. As long as you’re working away at your writing – thinking about it, talking about it, enjoying it – the ideas just keep on coming. To the point where you actually have to give serious consideration as to what the next project will be because there are always several to choose from.

It’s a wonderful thing to have an abundance of ideas sitting there at your disposal, a wonderful thing to have little events over the course of your day spark your creativity. Over the last few weeks I’ve been having a lot of ideas, all of which I’m jotting down or letting stew away in the back of my brain while I work on TCM.

Things that have sparked these ideas? Swine flu, dreams, the weather, a question Chibi asked me, a splinter of unknown material found in Lauren’s foot, a loose thread on an item of clothing….

Where are your ideas coming from lately?

  1. Nothing much lately, as I’m concentrating on working out this plot. But in the past I’ve got ideas from newspaper articles, scientific papers, photographs, places, sometimes just from the depths of my subconscious.

You are right, the more you write, the more the ideas flow. The splinter one sounds particularly interesting πŸ™‚

  2. oh, you just make my day… that first paragraph could be mine verbatim… πŸ™‚

lately it’s been from… snarky comments on a writing contest thread, an overabundance of Elton John, reading about the movie Starman, wondering what it would be like to tell ones’ daughters about that first time, cranking Madonna while on the freeway….

it really is a blessing to have more than I can ponder; now if there were only 18 months in a year ha ha ha….

  3. “The more you write, the more ideas you get…”

    So true.

Sorry that I haven’t been around in a while, I’ve been really caught up in my own writing projects.

I happy to see that you are still out there chasing rainbows. Don’t give up and don’t look back.

  4. Mine keep coming from all the research for my current novel. I’m especially finding myself more and more interested in the specific Japanese traditions steeped in myth. I got curious one day and found a huge article online about all the various mythological creatures in Japan.

I’m thinking of writing a humorous short story about one of them and there are many others that I’ve got fragments of an idea for, including one for a possible novel.
