Rookie mistake of the week

I had to share this, because seriously if you can’t laugh at yourself then there is something wrong! Besides, it’s a good reminder πŸ˜‰

So I forgot to attach a story to one of the submissions I sent this week. Go me! I’ve been trying really hard to get everything right, to look/sound professional, and then I go and forget to actually include the story in an email…

Such an easy mistake to make! I’ve gone and checked my other subs – thankfully they not only have stories attached, but they have the right stories attached.

The process that I’ve been using to avoid this exact thing from happening (because, lets face it – I frequently forget to attach things. I must do it at least once a week in my personal emails) is to fill in all the details of the email according to the submission guidelines for wherever I’m sending. Mentally ticking off each item as I go through the list, most lists include which format they want the stories sent in, so it’s not like I wasn’t reminded to put it onto the email!

Only after everything is done do I put in the email address – this prevents me from looking like a complete twit when my baby/cat/dog/elbow accidentally knocks the ‘send’ button.

And yet I still managed to leave off the attachment… I distinctly remember checking like 5 times that I had the right format, but I think I neglected to hit ‘attach’ before hitting ‘send’.

Ah well. Learn from my mistakes! They were really nice and emailed me last night to let me know that the attachment hadn’t come through (wasn’t that a nice way to put it?), so I got that off to them first thing this morning.

Now I really must eat something. My head is spinning and the baby is protesting that I’m not feeding it enough.

  1. Don’t worry too much about it – I’m sure they have received e-mails with much worse errors. There’s no sure-fire way of getting everything right, and if there was an idiot-proof system it would merely encourage idiots to become more creative. Such is life…

    Good luck with the subs.

  2. I go through a horrible ritual when I do that! Checking the attachments are there, then even opening up the files to make sure they haven’t somehow magically changed.

  3. I once gave the wrong wordcount – like several thousand out, because I’d cut and paste the opening details from another story. Yikes!

    It happens to everyone πŸ™‚

    1. Haha, thats a funny one too! And it hadn’t even crossed my mind that one could happen. I just hope I don’t do it again in a hurry – next time they might not be so nice πŸ˜‰
