So, it’s back to regular blogging now that NZ Speculative Fiction Blogging Week is over. It was fun, but I felt like I was struggling a bit to come up with ideas. I guess sleep deprivation will do that to you!
I’ve been trying for a long while now to get myself back into a good writing habit, and struggling with it. I think that was down to not having the right kind of goals, or clear objectives. I have said several times now that I want to do X,Y, Z, but not really had a plan of attack for that. So I’ve made a plan!
For the next four weeks I am going to finish a story and submit it by Sunday. I have four short stories lined up, all in pretty good condition, so it’s not a huge task. But by focusing on one story at a time and making sure I get them out on submission it’ll mean I might actually manage to get a few more acceptances this year. I started this by sending The Feud back out on Saturday, and this week am focusing on getting my latest sci-fi story done and dusted. Then Pine Song, The Cost of Living, and finally The Comfort of Wood.
After that? I’m not entirely sure. We’ll see how well I do. I figure by the end of the four weeks I’ll be back into a regular habit of working on my writing, and be feeling pretty good about where I’m at. I have other stories that need more work that I can continue the trend with, or I might work on finishing off some of the novella’s that are in mid draft. We shall see.
I’m a little late posting about this, but I signed up right at the end of August and have been reading the posts and thinking about everything. It should go nicely hand in hand with my plans to get back on track with the writing stuff, and get me to think more about what I’m doing. There are lots of great posts over there, so check them out if you think it sounds like something you might like to do.
Nick is running another NPI next month, which is also timely considering I am trying to get myself back into the swing of things.
This time around, we can set our own goals for each day and I’ve settled on 20 minutes a day of writing stuff – writing, rewriting, polishing, editing. It should be enough to get through the stories I have for the next few weeks, and if I have time left over I can use that writing on the novel, or getting a jump start on the next weeks story. It might be difficult initially to get myself into finding the required amount of time, but I’m ready for a little discipline.
Wish me luck! I’ll need a little bit of that, and probably some encouragement along the way. I know I’m not the only writer feeling a bit on the slack side and looking to reform a habit, must be that time of the year huh?
