December 3 – Moment. Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors). (Author: Ali Edwards)
This was a no-brainer. Without a doubt, the moment where I felt most alive this year was when I gave birth to my beautiful third daughter, Natalie.
Obviously, she’s not a newborn in that photo; she’s 5 months old now. But you’ll have to agree that she’s beautiful.
Despite having given birth a couple times now, I find it really hard to put the whole experience into words. There is SO much going on, and for the most part it’s internal – your body is doing this amazing thing, and your so intensely focused on bringing this life into the world that seriously anything could have been happening in the world around me, and I wouldn’t have had the foggiest idea of it.
I love birth. I find it empowering, and amazing and throughly life changing. When you have a new babe in your arms for the first time, moments after it’s arrival, that newborn smell, the warm limbs, still curled tight, still slick with blood and liquid, that scrunched up face and that feel, that feel of the other heartbeat that was beating inside you, but now it’s outside of you, beating against your heart, against your chest as your wee babe nuzzles in to find a breast. Oh my god. Perfection.
That was the moment this year when I felt most alive.
