Southern Cross Novel Challenge 2009

It’s now only a week until the big event starts – for those of you who don’t know, SoCNoC is our version of NaNoWriMo. It’s in one of the coldest months of the year for us in the southern hemisphere, and a wonderful time for staying inside and getting some solid words down on the page.

Unlike NaNoWriMo though, you can write on whatever you want to! We don’t require that you start a new novel, or even that you write a novel at all – you are more than welcome to continue writing your WIP, write a few short stories, a novella or two, even poetry if that’s what you’re passionate about!

And if you don’t think that you can get our 50,000 words in the month, you can always sign up for HalfNoC, which is what I’ll be doing this month. For some of us 25,000 words is a lot more realistic, but still, allows for a good amount of writing to be done within the month.

It’s about joining in, getting some support, having fun, and also developing a habit of writing every day.

Currently we have 58 people signed up for the main event, and 10 for the half, but I expect the numbers to climb over the next week – last year we had 143 participants and wrote over 2million words collectively which was really exciting!

If you want to join in, come along to Kiwiwriters and sign up. We would love to have you with us, and I’ll be there cheering everyone along for the month!
