I think this is the stage I am at with our place, it’s definitely a house, but even though we purchased it we’ve done nothing to make it a home.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the place and I’m looking forward to spending many years here, but I still have some boxes packed, a couple of wardrobes full of junk and other things lying around. We have only a few paintings/photos on the walls and more because there were nails handy than for any other reason.
Yesterday I finally got around to unwrapping a bunch of things – candle holders, ornaments, some fairies and dragons, that kind of thing. My desk feels better, for lack of a more fitting word. Kind of like I live here now, which got me thinking that it was high time I had some photos printed and actually put hooks on walls and made this place ours.
There are so many little things you can do to make a home, I’m starting with the cheaper stuff like photos, because I’m not quite ready to crack into painting, as much as I would love to. It’s a quick fix, and doesn’t require me sorting out colour schemes… as much as I want to.
I know that by the end of the year, a lot of work will have happened (magically, cause you know, when do I have the time?). A new kitchen, paint on walls, it’ll be feeling a lot more homely, a lot more ‘ours’, and that’s a nice feeling. Bit by bit, we’re putting our stamp on it, but it’ll be nice to see some big changes, I think then I’ll really feel like we’re making progress.
