Making a house a home

I think this is the stage I am at with our place, it’s definitely a house, but even though we purchased it we’ve done nothing to make it a home.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the place and I’m looking forward to spending many years here, but I still have some boxes packed, a couple of wardrobes full of junk and other things lying around. We have only a few paintings/photos on the walls and more because there were nails handy than for any other reason.

Yesterday I finally got around to unwrapping a bunch of things – candle holders, ornaments, some fairies and dragons, that kind of thing. My desk feels better, for lack of a more fitting word. Kind of like I live here now, which got me thinking that it was high time I had some photos printed and actually put hooks on walls and made this place ours.

There are so many little things you can do to make a home, I’m starting with the cheaper stuff like photos, because I’m not quite ready to crack into painting, as much as I would love to. It’s a quick fix, and doesn’t require me sorting out colour schemes… as much as I want to.

I know that by the end of the year, a lot of work will have happened (magically, cause you know, when do I have the time?). A new kitchen, paint on walls, it’ll be feeling a lot more homely, a lot more ‘ours’, and that’s a nice feeling. Bit by bit, we’re putting our stamp on it, but it’ll be nice to see some big changes, I think then I’ll really feel like we’re making progress.

  1. I don’t know if it’s your style, but if you don’t want to crack into painting proper how about some stenciling? Particularly on things like kitchen cupboards. If you’re going to redo the place anyway it doesn’t really matter if it’s want you want long term, but you can put your mark on it, so to speak.

    1. lol if we HAD some cupboards then that would be really cool! The only ones we do have are staying, so I should try and be nice to them.
I know I’ll end up getting into the painting sooner rather than later, I won’t be able to help myself….

  2. I still need to do some of that and it’s been a year since we moved into our house…

Mostly I’m trying to empty out the boxes in my study/office, which seems to be the place where all miscellaneous crap ends up.

I’ve also been wanting shelves and wall art for the house but it doesn’t look like that’ll happen anytime soon what with the money we’ve been needing for our vacation in September.

    1. You know, it’s our study/office that gets clogged up too, it’s the far room, the one you can shut it off easily from the rest of the house… lol poor room.
But now at least I know it’s not just me! 🙂 Not long til vacation for you guys, you must be getting excited.
